College Football Week One Awards

September 8, 2012

The opening weekend slate of games were short on drama, and long on sloppy play, but it was good just to have the game back on TV.  Alabama destroyed Michigan to stake their claim for #1.  Week two should bring plenty of intriguing match-ups, highlighted by both SEC-newcomers, Missouri and Texas A&M, as they host Georgia and Texas A&M, respectively.

Game of the Week: Virginia Tech over Georgia Tech, 20-17 in OT.  Va Tech was in danger of actually losing a game dominated by defense and special teams, two key areas the Hokies seem to specialize in.  However, the Hokies kicked a FG in the closing seconds of regulation and in OT to knock off their ACC Coastal rivals.

Offensive Player of the Week: Geno Smith – QB – West Virginia.  What a huge game for the senior signal-caller.  He finished 32-36 for 323 yards and 5 total touchdowns in the Mountaineers rout over Marshall.

Defensive Player of the Week: Dee Milliner – CB – Alabama.  Milliner led the Crimson Tide’s demolition of Michigan with 5 tackles, 4 pass deflections and an INT.
